Beatrix Farrand (née Beatrix Cadwalader Jones, 1872-1959) was a professional landscape architect, the designer of the gardens at Dumbarton Oaks, and a friend of Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss. Her oval, bust-length oil portrait is by an unidentified, probably Italian artist and is dated stylistically to the late nineteenth century. In 1895, Beatrix Jones and her mother made a grand tour of Europe, spending considerable time in Italy, and this portrait may have been made during this trip. The fashionable "society portrait" depicts the young Beatrix Jones wearing an embroidered white satin jacket with long puffed sleeves trimmed with ecru lace or embroidery and revealing a matching lace or embroidered bodice. She also wears a long necklace of large crystal beads spaced along a thin gold chain.
