Compare Hartman 1907 A Bat-pendant from Nocoya. (Balser, letter of April 17, 1954 in dealer''s files). - "Winged pendants are a type of ornament found in Costa Rica, Panama, northern Colombia and Venezuela, and in the West Indies as far as Puerto Rico. The usual form is a flattened, elongated ovalwhich was suspended horizontally. The material may be jade, agate, or other stones or shell. Occasionally the body and the head of a bat were carved in the center, and the whole, either with or without the carving, evidently symbolizes a bat with extended wings. Figure 20a, illustrates an example found near Guapiles, which is perhaps the most complex ever recorded. The head with pointed ears and the short legs are typical. The wings, however, are elaborately carved to represent crocodile heads in profile. Hartman has published an almost equally intricate jade example from Nicoya as well as simpler specimens which made posible the bat identification."
