Early Byzantine Art

With the deposition in 476 of Romulus Augustulus, the last western Roman emperor, Constantinople became the absolute center of Byzantium. Under certain rulers, such as Justinian I (527–565) and Herakleios (610–641), the empire enjoyed enormous prosperity, both economically and territorially. The luxurious materials and fine craftsmanship of art made in this period reflect the empire’s vast resources and the skillfulness of its artists.
