Fabricated from pages made of treated animal skins and assembled together in strong bindings, Byzantine manuscripts were made to endure. Many contain biblical passages such as Gospel texts or psalms, often interspersed with annotations to help guide the reader in prayer. The most luxurious copies include extensive illuminations, often rendered in precious pigments and gold.
