Late Byzantine Art

The sack of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade in 1204 drove a devastating wedge into Byzantine history. Byzantine empires in exile fought the Crusaders and each other for the mantle of empire, until, in 1261, the Palaiologoi of Nicaea recovered the ancient capital, establishing Byzantium’s last imperial dynasty. Art produced in this late period presents a surprising paradox: the most stunning examples of late Byzantine artistic production were crafted precisely when the empire was in economic and political disarray.
