Description
Henri d'Orléans, duc de Longueville et d'Estouteville, prince de Châtelaillon, and comte de Neufchâtel et de Valangin, was born in 1568, the son of Léonor d'Orléans-Longueville (1540-1573) and Marie de Bourbon, duchesse d'Estouteville and comtesse de Saint-Pol (1539-1601). He married Catherine Gonzaga (1568-1629), daughter of Ludovico Gonzaga, Duc de Nevers, and Henriette de Nevers, in 1588. Henri d'Orléans served as Grand Chamberlain of France under Henri IV from 1589 to 1595, the year of his death. According to an inscription at the upper right: AETATIS SVE 18 AN, this portrait was made when the duke was eighteen years old, or about 1586. In this portrait he wears a buttoned herring-bone patterned jacket with a ruff at the neck. The artist is unidentified.
