Description
Francesco Piranesi, the son of the famous Giovanni Battista Piranesi, collaborated with the French artist Louis-Jean Desprez on a series of hand-colored views of Naples, Rome, and Pompeii, which were advertised in 1783. The series was not completed before Desprez left Rome, and Piranesi reissued the existing series in 1789 without coloring. This engraving depicts Pompeii’s Herculaneum Gate, which originally had three arches, and the Street of Tombs.
