The map belongs to a series of printed townscapes named Civitates Orbis Terrarum, which was published in six volumes between 1572 and 1618. In the rendering of Jerusalem, Braun has adopted the interesting strategy of dividing the city along an imaginary vertical line; on the left there is a fictional portrayal of the Holy City in the time of Jesus, and on right the “modern” city of the sixteenth century.
