Georges Rouault was born in Paris on May 27, 1871. He apprenticed as a glass painter and attended the École des Arts-Décoratifs as well as the École des Beaux-Arts in Gustave Moreau's studio. After working briefly with the French Fauve artists, Rouault evolved toward a more somber style, both in palette and subject matter. He favored watercolor primarily before 1918, when he turned to oils. He died in Paris on February 13, 1958.
