The Sion Treasure is an extensive and varied group of silver and gold liturgical objects discovered in the early 1960s in southern Turkey. Some pieces were found bent or crushed, suggesting that they were going to be melted down and their metal reused. Scholars believe the treasure was buried during the early seventh century, when Sasanian invasions were followed by Arab incursions. The emphasis on the names of individual donors that appear on numerous objects attests to the wealth and devotion of the local community.
