Byzantine Mosaics

Roman floors were often decorated with mosaics, patterns and images made of small pieces of colored stone, called tesserae, pressed into a bed of plaster. Early Christian and Byzantine artisans took over and expanded this medium, applying it to walls and domes and introducing colored and gilded glass tiles.
