Description
Inscribed in Italian next to the kneeling guitarist is a four-line stanza, which reads in translation: “If you have to sing you should sing. If you have to hurt you have to hurt. If you have to love you must love. If you have to draw, you must.” Mildred Barnes Bliss acquired this drawing and HC.D.1941.38.(I) at the artist’s studio in Santa Barbara, California, in 1941.
