Three thousand years and over fifty degrees of latitude are represented in the collection, which originates in three major geographical areas. Mesoamerica extends from modern-day Mexico to Honduras, and was home to a variety of sophisticated societies including the Olmec, Maya, Teotihuacan, and Aztec. The Intermediate Area refers to the region between modern-day Honduras and Colombia, where a multitude of chiefly societies held sway. The Andes region, from Ecuador to Argentina, saw the rise of diverse cultures including the Chavín, Moche, Chimú, Wari, and Inka.
