Byzantine Collection Highlights by Medium
< up a level
In the early Christian and early Byzantine period, the Greco-Roman traditions of sculpture in stone and bronze continued, but in a new abstracted style which expresses a changing spirituality. In the 7th to 10th centuries, luxury arts of smaller scape, such as gold and silver, enamel, and ivory carving, began to eclipse sculpture as the most important media for artistic expression. Byzantine mosaics have been admired from the middle ages to the present day as representing the Byzantine art form par excellence.
