Byzantine Collection Highlights by Period
< up a level
The Byzantine epoch stretches from the 4th to the 15th century. Art of the early Christian and early Byzantine periods reflects the gradual transition from Greco-Roman Olympian religion and Classicism to Christian culture. The iconoclastic controversy of the 8th and 9th centuries prompted the mature formulae of the art of the Middle Byzantine period. The Late Period, following the occupation of Constantinople by the Crusaders in the 13th century, produced objects of virtuosity and luxury and left a legacy that has lived on in post-Byzantine Orthodox culture.
