Early Byzantine

up a level

With the deposition in 476 of Romulus Augustulus, the last Western Roman Emperor, Byzantium, renamed Constantinople, became the absolute center of the Empire. Under certain rulers, such as Justinian I (527-565) and Herakleios (610-641), the Empire enjoyed ennormous prosperity, both economically and in political gains. The art of this period is a continuation of early Christian art, establishing new types of Christian imagery, while still tolerating more traditional mythology in luxury goods for private use.
