Until the Emperor Constantine the Great legalized Christianity in 319, its artistic output was, as is the case of catacomb paintings, unpretentious and private. With imperial endorsement, Christian patrons began commissioning more ostentations works from artisans and architects. Christianity continued to coexist with traditional Roman religion, with the result that obecjts and tomb sites are often difficult to classify.
