Once back in Guatemala City, Bliss and Walcott flew to the heart of the Petén. Using the town of Isla Flores as their starting point they embarked on a two-and-a-half day mule ride to the ruins of Uaxactún, the subject of extensive studies by members of the Carnegie Institution. On their way back they stopped at the then largely unexcavated ruins of Tikal.
